Note: Lopen Chimi was not only one of my first teachers but also one of the most generous Dharma practitioners I have known. After a personal realization about the fragility of life led me back to the Dharma, I wrote several articles for him, including a short biography in English.
However, a strange situation soon unfolded. I had posted a tribute video for him on YouTube, which became massively viral. Yet, I noticed an overwhelming number of dislikes. My curiosity led me to a video from one of the institutes he founded, where they had replicated the song from my tribute. It became clear that the dislikes on my video were originating from their community.
It is deeply disheartening to think that my Lopen dedicated his life to teaching and spreading Buddhism, yet the people in his own institute, despite wearing robes, seem untouched by the Dharma's principles. While their approval means nothing to me, I have removed all images and mentions of Lopen from my blog to avoid causing further heartache to those who see me as a threat. From now on, I will refrain from mentioning him publicly. My gratitude will remain private, and I will no longer look to those in red robes as a automatic source of inspiration.
